Re-engagement email automation: define inactivity first

Re-engagement concerns someone with an existing relationship, not a new subscriber. Decide what “inactive” means in your own records and whether contacting that person again is appropriate.

Repli Email is an admin-only private beta. Creating an account or upgrading a plan does not unlock email sending. No public email allowance, price or launch date is offered here.

A quiet record is not the same as an unread email

Contact inactivity can mean no record updates, no purchases or no meaningful interaction, depending on the source. Open signals may be incomplete or distorted by mailbox privacy behavior. Missing opens do not reliably prove that someone stopped reading.

The inspected Repli contact scanner evaluates inactivity from contact updated_at and configured days. That is a record-age rule, not a verified last-open or last-click rule. Do not present it as automatically discovering disengaged newsletter readers.

Check permission before a win-back

Do not re-engage people who unsubscribed, complained or never agreed to the email purpose. An old address and a dormant tag do not override suppression. If the relationship is unclear or very old, retiring the address may be more appropriate than another promotional message.

An illustrative final check-in can acknowledge the gap, explain one genuine reason to continue and make the communication choice easy. Avoid invented offers or promises that a certain number of win-back emails performs better. Choose a limited sequence only when it is appropriate for the relationship.

Record the outcome explicitly

If someone changes a preference or responds, establish how that fact reaches the contact record and which rule reads it. An exit step ends a configured run when reached; it does not prove universal real-time cancellation on any engagement.

Tagging a contact dormant does not suppress them by itself. Future audiences must explicitly exclude that state, and unsubscribes must remain separately enforced. No automatic list-cleaning service, inbox improvement or recovery rate is promised by Repli’s private beta.

Illustrative planning example

Review

Identify existing permission and a real inactivity signal before selecting contacts.

Check-in

“Would you still like updates about this topic?” Use a genuine preference destination.

Outcome

Record the answer and exclude dormant contacts deliberately; never restore an unsubscribe by tagging.

Review checklist

Define the signal

Specify the exact record or event that makes a contact inactive.

Review eligibility

Exclude unsubscribed, suppressed and inappropriate old contacts.

Apply the preference

Verify how responses update the record and change future audiences.

Frequently asked questions

Does no recorded open mean a contact is inactive?

Not necessarily. Open measurement can be incomplete. Choose a reliable, relevant source signal rather than treating missing opens as proof.

Does Repli inactivity mean last email engagement?

The inspected scanner uses contact record updated_at, not verified last-open or last-click activity.
